History
The early sixties were the beginning of the golden era for folk and rock music. The Stones and The Yardbirds were new bands on the scene, and the Beatles were number one in Britain and were taking America by storm. Everybody wanted to join the band, and many did. While in college, Don Miller and some friends started a band for fun, playing mostly Motown and 50's music, but soon became a campus hit. Soon booking agents found out about this new band, called the "Weejuns", and began booking them around the region. By now the group was starting to play a new type of music that would soon be known as Beach Music.
Their popularity grew as they
became the opening act for such groups as The Dave Clark Five, and a
little known group called the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The group's
success continued as they recorded 2 singles in the mid 60's that were
big regional hits amoung Beach Music
fans. By the late 60's the group members started to go theirown ways
and some went on to play with such performers as Ronnie Milsap and The
Band of Oz. By then Don was selling musical instruments and the first
Don's Music City was the one source of instruments that all the
regional bands came to for their needs.
In 1968, Don and family built the
first Don's Music City in Burlington N.C., with their own hands! This
was the one of the first real "Music Combo" stores in the Carolinas
region to carry all types of instruments and equipment, as well as all
major brands. During the next 20 years, they sold and rented
instruments to the likes of Chet Atkins, Elvis Presley, Pat Matheney,
and countless other legends who were performing in the region at the
time. During this time, Don's Music City was becoming one of the
biggest dealers in the south. They soon opened a second location in
nearby Greensboro N.C.. Years later they opened a 3rd location on the north side of Greensboro and more recently a 4th location in Danville
V.A..
Don's carries or sells every major brand of
musical instruments. So when you shop Don's, you know you will
serviced by someone that understands music and cares about your needs.
